The origins of Kelman Bottles date back to 1895 with the formation of The Glenshaw Glass Company in Glenshaw, PA. For more than 100 years, Glenshaw produced quality containers at the current location and another plant in Orangeburg, NY. At one time, Glenshaw produced 950 tons of glass per day at the Glenshaw facility alone. The legacy of Glenshaw has always been the quality people working in the plant. That legacy continues today.
After many prosperous years, Glenshaw Glass Company ran into a series of unfortunate events at a time when many glass producers were struggling. In late 2004, Glenshaw was forced into bankruptcy and on November 24th, 2004 the furnaces were turned off for what everyone thought was the final time…Fortunately, this was not the case.
In October, 2005, a real estate firm acquired the Glenshaw property and assets and saved the plant from becoming a retail shopping mall. The property owner converted the facility from a single tenant occupancy to one which has several tenants. Today the plant is home to a glass production facility, a start up vodka distillery, an L.E Smith Glass Center and a growing list of tenants.
In early June 2006, Port Glenshaw Glass LLC acquired the operating assets and began the process of restarting of the glass production equipment. The company began under the trade name Glenshaw Glass Company. Those of us that saw the plant before this process began can attest that this was a MAJOR undertaking. However, an incredible team effort culminated by the first glass bottle being produced on January 11, 2007. The only way to describe the effort that was required is as follows…"If we have to explain, you probably would not understand."
Over the course of 2007, it became clear that the name Glenshaw Glass Company had been tainted by the final months of operations prior to its bankruptcy. More than a century of quality glass production was impacted by some inferior glass produced in those final days and association with final difficulties. After considerable discussion among our team, many clients and our valued vendors, the decision was reached to retire the name "Glenshaw Glass". We do so with the utmost respect and see this as not an end but rather a new beginning.
Port Glenshaw Glass LLC was phased out at year end 2007 and was replaced by our new name, Kelman Bottles LLC effective January 1, 2008.
